State Bicycle Co, a bicycle manufacturing company, has a Youtube vlog series called Riding Fixed Up Mountains, with Pros that features professional cyclists telling some of their craziest stories while riding. But rather than just film the cyclists while they talk, State Bicycle Co. approached us to recreate the scenes through animation. This particular short story is told by Alex Howes and how he accidentally rode off a cliff.
Process
This story was equal parts hilarious and scary, so we really wanted to make sure we did it justice with the art direction. We kept the line-work loose and playful to lean into the chaotic and charming storytelling. We also created compositions that were relatively minimal to let the viewer interpret the rest. For instance on the crash scene, rather than showing the actual crash, we wanted to visualize what it would feel and sound like, as if you were the cyclist.
